First audition held in Rodrigues
Commission truth and justice will be in Rodrigues 24-31 July to hold its first hearings related to land issues. For this occasion the President, Alex Boraine, and Commissioners will on the island . Approximately 200 folders have been received in Mauritius. The Commission has one year to submit its report.
The Commission has not yet determined the place where to hold hearings. A person is already on the spot for requests to point out that these hearings held follows the visit of the President and the Vice-President of the Commission to Rodrigues in April last in preparation for the hearings. If a few rodriguans families already testified before the Commission in Mauritius, these hearings in Rodrigues will be held for the first time. After this first session, the Commission intends to return back in a few months to complete the hearings. Remember, the first hearings of the Commission began last October and to date some 200 cases have been received. Several persons will be heard on the occuring of the legacy of slavery in Mauritian society. June 30 was the deadline to submit applications for representations. The hearings can be in writing or oral, on which the Commission intends to work. Since under the terms of the statute governing, the work must be completed within 24 months.
Given that the time available is to submit its recommendations, the Commission intends complete auditions in a few months to spend the second phase of the work on drafting the report. This period will include a research work and consultation among the members of present recommendations. If necessary , the Commission could however have a further six months period. Truth and justice Commission intends to submit its report in July 2011. Its recommendations will be financial, symbolic, or other, and it is the Government who will make the final decision. Remember that a Truth and Justice Bill on the creation of a Commission is to evaluate the consequences of slavery and the engagisme in Mauritius, the colonial period to this day, was adopted in Parliament last April. The purpose of the Statute is to do analysis on slavery and the engagisme island. For years, many documents and research published by the university and historians allowed us to know the history of slavery in Mauritius. But this is the first State into the exercise aimed at lifting the veil on the darkest parts of the history of Mauritius.
The Commission invites all Rodriguans who would like to make contact with Anabelle Agathe, who is already in Rodrigues, on the following number: 707 53 42
